Omdömet står sig. Lenin har haft ett avgörande inflytande på vår 1900-talshistoria. Men om alla hört namnet och ingen upplever sig neutral inför det är det sämre beställt med faktisk kunskap om Lenins liv och gärning. Ty då han haft detta avgörande inflytande är personen och politikern oss dold bakom myter; tunga ridåer av propaganda och motpropaganda. Det är därför Stefan Lindgrens biografi blir så värdefull. Den är inte bara föredömligt enkel och redig. Han skriver för att tydliggöra. JAN MYRDAL Stefan Lindgren, född 1949, är slavist, journalist, författare och översättare. Sedan mer än 55 år har han på nära håll följt den politiska utvecklingen i Sovjetunionen/Ryssland och givit ut en rad reportage i bokform och självständiga verk i historiska ämnen. Som resenär i Asien gav han redan på 1980-talet ut tre reseskildringar om den afghanska gerillans krig mot Sovjetunionens ockupation och en monografi om S:t Petersburg. Som översättare från ryska har han introducerat en lång rad ryska politiska tänkare men också skönlitteratur av bland andra Babel, Alechem, Gogol, Gorkij, Tjechov, Dostojevskij, Aleksijevitj och Saltykov-Sjtjedrin. Denna bok om Lenin utgavs första gången 1999 på Fischers förlag och därefter i flera påföljande upplagor. Det är också den enda svenska Leninbiografi som bygger på egna arkivstudier av allt det material som offentliggjordes under 1990-talet efter Sovjetunionens fall och har därför i Sverige kommit att betraktas som något av ett standardverk.
