Fram till kvällen den 4 juni 1989 levde Liao Yiwu som en okänd och opolitisk hippiepoet i Kina. Men med massakern på Himmelska fridens torg förändrades allt i ett slag. Efter att Liao Yiwu hade framfört en regimkritisk dikt blev han satt i fängelse i fyra år. I "För en sång och hundra sånger" beskriver Liao Yiwu på ett enastående och gripande sätt den brutala verklighet han fick erfara under fängelsetiden. Han är skoningslös, också gentemot sig själv: han beskriver hur han och hans medfångar bryts ner till halvmänniskor, och i detta tillstånd glömmer vad det innebär att vara människa och medmänniska.För en sång och hundra sånger är ett unikt tidsdokumentom vår egen tid, och om ett land som alltmer dominerarvår värld.Liao Yiwu, född 1958, är en kinesisk författare, reporter,poet och musiker. I juni 1989, efter att ha hört talas omprotesterna på Himmelska fridens torg, skrev han en långdikt kallad "Massaker". Han visste att den aldrig skullebli publicerad, och spelade därför in den på kassettbandtillsammans med oljud och tjutande som skulle åkalla dedödas andar.I februari 1990 anhölls Liao Yiwu tillsammans med sin gravida fru och sex vänner då de höll på att stiga ombord på ett tåg. Han dömdes till fyra års fängelse och svartlistades. Under fängelsetiden utsattes han för tortyr och förnedrande behandling, drabbades av flera sammanbrott och försökte vid två tillfällen begå självmord. Därav fick han smeknamnet "Den stora galningen".Då han släpptes från fängelset hade hans fru och dotterlämnat honom, och hans forna litteraturvänner höllsig undan från honom. Under en tid levde han somhemlös gatumusiker i den sydkinesiska staden Chengdu.Sommaren 2011 vandrade han över gränsen till Vietnam,varefter han lyckades fly till Tyskland.Liao Yiwus böcker har publicerats i Taiwan och Hong Kong,men är förbjudna på det kinesiska fastlandet. Flera av hans böcker är översatta till engelska, franska och tyska. Han räknas till en av vår tids största kinesiska författare.
