De nederländska historikerna Rudolf Dekker och Lotte van de Pol beskriver i detta pionjärarbete de personliga levnadsförhållandena, motiven för och de sexuella aspekterna hos ett kvinnoliv i en mansroll: ett liv fört av kvinnor som gick in i armén eller flottan, valde typiska mansyrken eller rent av gifte sig med en kvinna. Till grund för författarnas efterforskning ligger etthundratjugo fall av kvinnor förklädda till män från 1500- till 1800-talet.
