De båda studierna i den här boken visar hur estetik och tilltal är nära sammankopplade med bilden av välfärdssamhällets utveckling och förändring. I den första studien, "Samhällsbyggarnas tv-undervisning. Estetik och ideologi i utbildningsprogram för televisionen", ställer Ann-Kristin Wallengren frågan hur ett programs form och estetik hänger ihop med samtidens samhällsbild och ideologier. Genom analyser av ett antal samhällskunskapsprogram för skolbarn visar hon hur samhällsprogrammen har gått från en ganska auktoritär estetik över mjukisprogram till fiktiva och berättande former där människor själva får komma till tals. I den andra studien, "Hos främlingar och grannar i öster. Om tilltal och samhällsbilder i några utbildningsprogram", granskar Cecilia Wadensjö program i samhällsvetenskap och historia om grannländerna i öst och visar hur tilltalet förändras, bort från barnet som passiv mottagare av kunskap till den aktivt väljande och medskapande lyssnaren.
