Även biskops- och prästämbetena har i praktiken genomgått snabba förändringar. Det kan vara en utmaning för såväl studenter och nyvigda som för personer med lång erfarenhet av vigningstjänsten att förhålla sig till de olika förståelser av ämbetet som kommer till uttryck idag. Bokens kapitel handlar om hur Svenska kyrkans ämbetsteologi formas i teori och praktik. Flera av författarna diskuterar normativa dokument som utgör grunden för vigningstjänsten. Detta kan handla om texter från Bibeln, Luthers texter och nyare ekumeniska dokument. I kapitlen behandlas yrkesvardag och läroförmedling, utbildning och identitet.
