Om Gränserna För Statens Verksamhet

Att påstå att Wilhelm von Humboldts Om gränserna för statens verksamhet är en central text inom den europeiska idéhistorien är knappast en överdrift, kvarstår dock bara att slå fast för vilka och i vilket avseende. von Humboldt var nämligen lika mycket statsman, humanist, filosof, lingvist, politisk tänkare som antropolog och dessutom grundare av Berlins universitet. Redan 1792 hade Humboldt avslutat skrivandet av Om gränserna, men det var först 1851 som boken slutligen publicerades. Somliga hävdar att förseningen berodde på rädsla för censur och repressalier. Så kom det sig att boken först fick sitt genombrott i England och inte minst hos Johan Stuart Mill, vars epokgörande Om friheten har hämtat sitt motto från Humboldts arbete. Idag betraktas Om gränserna för statens verksamhet som en klassiker, inte minst inom den liberala idétraditionen. Det är dock värt att notera att texten kretsar lika mycket kring tron på individen och dennas självförverkligande genom bildningen som kring rädslan för statens oinskränkta makt. Så tillvida är Om gränserna inte bara en text för statsvetare och politiker utan egentligen i ännu högre grad avsedd för vanliga människor .
