Spaniens nuvarande flagga, populärt känd som "rödlikada", föddes under Charles IIIs regeringstid den 28 maj 1785, även om den inte infördes som en nationell flagga förrän 1843, då Elizabeth II var drottningen. Historien om denna flagga framgår av ett maritimt behov, eftersom Felipe V och Bourbon-dynastin till den spanska tronen var de halveuropeiska flaggorna mycket lika och förvirring uppstod framför allt i havet. Före 1785 använde den spanska marinen den officiella flaggan för dem, som bestod av en vit bakgrund (egen från Bourbon-huset) med vapenskölden i centrum. Problemet var att andra stater som Frankrike, Storbritannien, Sicilien eller Toscana också hade vitt som huvudfärg på sina flaggor, och svårigheten att skilja från varandra orsakade att fartygen inte kunde skjuta förrän de var säkra på om flaggan var en allierad eller en fiende. För att lösa problemet befallde Carlos III sin marinminister Antonio Valdes och Fernández Bazan, att utarbeta en ny flagga endast avsedd för marinanvändning. Valdes kallade sedan en tävling och valde de tolv bästa skisserna, som han presenterade kungen för att fatta det slutliga beslutet. Av dem alla valde monarken den trefärgade flaggan med de röda och gula färgerna på grund av sin synlighet till havet, även om den varierade proportionerna mellan ränderna och befallde att den gula remsan var dubbelt så tjock som den röda.
