Mälardalen är rik på fornminnen. Här pågår sedan tusentals år en livlig aktivitet hela järnåldern, inte minst under periodens senare århundraden. Med sina många vikar och flodmynningar var Mälaren ett utmärkt centrum för transport av varor lokalt tillverkade såväl som införda från andra områden. Här växer ett antal maktcentra fram som i övergångsskedet yngre järnålder - tidig medeltid blir allt viktigare att kontrollera. Arkeologiska undersökningar har lärt oss mycket om centrala platser som Birka, Sigtuna och Gamla Uppsala, alla i Mälardalens östra del, men betydligt färre undersökningar har gjorts i dess västra delar. Denna lucka försöker ett antal artiklar nu fylla. Vilka maktcentra fanns där? Hur gick varutransporterna? Hur var områdena sammanlänkande? Med utgångspunkt från de stora gravfälten i Tumbo och dess handelsplats, samtida med Birka, försöker författarna belysa området från västra Sörmland, delar av Västmanland och den östra delen av Närke under yngre järnålder - tidig medeltid. Genom att undersöka landhöjningen, diskutera spår av verksamhet från den aktuella tiden, transportvägar och mönster i geografin, likheter och olikheter mellan områdena, växer långsamt bilden fram av en livlig verksamhet som i mångt och mycket blivit bortglömd, men vars arkeologiska spår här lyfts fram.
