Burja Noir 2022
Drink now or cellar for up to 8 years. No need to decant before serving. Primoz Lavrenčič’s exciting venture was founded in 2009 when he decided to leave his family’s winery and pursue a bold new vision of natural winemaking and organic and biodynamic viticulture. Primoz’s family have deep roots in Slovenia’s Vipava Valley dating back to at least 1499, and for the past three generations they have been winemakers here. Primoz has put all of that insider knowledge to good use by planting indigenous varieties and seeking to work in harmony with nature wherever possible. This particular bottling is made from Primoz’s only non-native variety, Pinot Noir. According to Primoz there is evidence that Pinot Noir has been grown in the Vipava Valley for centuries and it is well-suited to the conditions here. The vines are farmed organically and the grapes fermented using wild yeasts. The young wine then spends two years maturing in a combination of large 10-15 hectolitre and standard barriques before bottling. On the nose there are classic Pinot hints of cherry and soft red berries like raspberries and strawberries while the first sip reveals a bright streak of acidity and smooth tannins. The vibrant flavour profile balanced by earthy notes and dried herbs makes this a great gastronomic wine which can be enjoyed with everything from charcuterie and cheeses to duck, game and tomato-based pasta dishes.
Burja Bela 2023
Cellar for up to 8 years. Serve chilled. The Lavrenčič family have lived in the Vipava Valley in Slovenia since at least 1499 and for the past three generations they have made wine here. In 2009 Primoz Lavrenčič left the family winery to set up his own project named Burja after the fierce wind that blows through the valley and has a big impact on everything from daily life to the kinds of crops that can be grown here. Primoz seeks to work in harmony with nature wherever possible and practices both organic and biodynamic viticulture. He primarily uses local grape varieties which are well-suited to this region with its proximity to the sea and the mountains. Bela is crafted from Malvazija, Welschriesling, Rebula, and Vipavec grapes which grow on marl and sandstone soils in the valley. The fruit is carefully harvested by hand with 70% fermented in oak barrels and the remainder in concrete tanks. The young wine is then aged in oak barrels for 11 months and is bottled without filtering or fining to preserve the full natural character of the wine. The result is an intense white wine with ripe tropical and stone fruits on the nose and a rich texture and medium body balanced by a lively streak of acidity.
Burja Stranice 2023
Enjoy it now, or cellar for a few years. No need to decant before serving. Burja Estate is nestled in Vipava Valley, in the southwestern corner of Slovenia. It is a landscape famous for its white wines, and shares many varietals with the neighbouring region of Friuli, in Italy. Burja is a small, family-run estate with strong roots in the region (dating all the way back to 1499), and a strong conviction in the power of biodynamic farming. This wine is crafted from 100% Rebula, an often overlooked varietal that is native to this corner of the world. It grew on soils composed of ancient, decomposed fossils, fine-grained marlstone and sandstone. They are rich in calcium carbonate and impart a subtle edge of minerality to the fruits. Stranice is a beautiful golden colour in the glass, replete with aromas of stone fruit. Juicy scents of peach and apricot intermingle with subtle bursts of lemon zest and lime. The Rebula grapes were fermented in oak barrels, and aged on the lees for 18 months before bottling. The palate reveals a full-bodied, deep white wine, with ripe notes of stone fruit, honeysuckle, thyme and chalky seashell minerality. This is an excellent wine to enjoy with some seafood, such as oysters and mussels, soft cheeses, or light salads.

Burja Zelen 2024
Cellar for up to 8 years. Serve chilled. With a presence in the Vipava Valley since as early as 1499, the Lavrenčič family have been making wine here for three generations and have an intimate connection with the region and its land. In 2009 Primoz Lavrenčič decided to set out on his own and create his own venture which he named Burja after the strong winds that impact every part of daily life in this mountainous region. Wherever possible Primoz seeks to work in harmony with nature; he plants indigenous grape varieties, farms his vineyards organically and uses wild yeasts and long maturations in large oak casks in the winery. This unusual wine is made from the indigenous “zelen” grape which means “green” in Slovenian. The variety takes its name from the emerald tinge which can be noticed especially in the fresh grape must. Primoz macerates his version on the skins for two days to create a so-called “orange wine” with greater complexity and a rich and creamy texture. The wine is then fermented and matured in concrete tanks to preserve the natural character of the grape. The result is an intensely aromatic wine with hints of white flowers, green apple, citrus and a steely minerality. On the palate there is a medium body, gentle tannins and vibrant fruit flavours with a long and elegant finish with hints of bitter almonds and cream.
