Författaren till den här annorlunda Parisboken är inte ensam om sin beundran för den berömde kommissarie Maigret, en polis fjärran från dagens fysiskt utlevande kollegor. Maigret var psykologins mästare, problemlösaren mer intresserad av människan i mördaren, bedragaren eller tjuven än i brottslingen. Han föredrog bussen framför bilen, taxin framför piketen. Hans vapen var ordet, lyssnandet, intuitionen. Maigrets miljö utgjordes av Paris dimmiga kajer, förfallna industrikvarter, barer och vindoftande hak i lindrig belysning, bistroer med stampublik, nattklubbar med gäster som uppskattade natten mer än dagen. Hans värld genom ett oändligt antal böcker var de centrala delarna av Paris. Där puffade han på sin pipa, tog promenader med sin kloka hustru, svepte ett otal glas vitt eller rött vin, spisade genuin husmanskost, piggade upp sig med ett eller annat glas calvados eller några stop öl. Denne franske polis stod mer på den svages sida än på den starkes, han kallsvettades av obehag inför egenkära aristokrater, snorkiga åklagare och domare, liksom inför förslagna och bestickliga advokater. Han rörde sig hemvant i missbrukarnas och de prostituerades värld. Han skuggade små och stora bedragare. Han kände staden som sin egen ficka.
