La obra fue publicada en abril de 1943, tanto en ingls como en francs, por la editorial estadounidense Reynal & Hitchcock, mientras que la editorial francesa ditions Gallimard no pudo imprimir la obra hasta 1946, tras la liberacin de Francia. Incluido entre los mejores libros del siglo XX en Francia, El principito se ha convertido en el libro escrito en francs ms ledo y ms traducido. As pues, cuenta con traducciones a ms de doscientos cincuenta idiomas y dialectos, incluyendo el sistema de lectura braille. La obra tambin se ha convertido en uno de los libros ms vendidos de todos los tiempos, puesto que ha logrado vender ms de 140 millones de ejemplares en todo el mundo, con ms de un milln de ventas por ao. La novela fue traducida al espaol por Bonifacio del Carril y su primera publicacin en dicho idioma fue realizada por la editorial argentina Emec Editores en septiembre de 1951.
