You Talkin' To Me?
Rhetoric gives our words the power to inspire. But it's not just for politicians: it's all around us, whether you're buttering up a key client or persuading your children to eat their greens. You have been using rhetoric yourself, all your life. A...
Write to the Point
Writing tends to make people anxious, and with good reason. The first sentence of a job application letter can consign it to the bin. A speech intended to rouse can put a room to sleep. A mistimed tweet can cost you your job. And a letter to a bel...
Words Like Loaded Pistols: The Power of Rhetoric from the Iron Age to the Information Age
'An entertaining history of great oratory' (New Yorker) and a primer to rhetoric's key techniques Rhetoric gives our words the power to inspire. But it's not just for politicians: it's all around us, whether you're buttering up a key client or persuading your children to eat their vegetables. You have been using rhetoric yourself, all your life. After all, you know what a rhetorical question is, don't you? In Words Like Loaded Pistols, Sam Leith traces the art of argument from ancient Greece through the present day. He introduces verbal villains from Hitler to Donald Trump--and the three musketeers: ethos, pathos, and logos. He explains how rhetoric works in speeches from Cicero to Zelensky and pays tribute to the rhetorical brilliance of AC/DC's 'Back in Black.' Before you know it, you'll be confident in chiasmus and proud of your panegyrics--because rhetoric is useful, relevant, and crucial to understanding the world around us.
Lord Berners

Ram Jam: Ram Jam 1977
'Ram Jam' is the debut studio album by the New York rock band Ram Jam. The band consisted of Bill Bartlett (guitar), Howie Arthur Blauvelt (bass), Pete Charles (drums) and Myke Scavone (lead vocals). Bartlett was formerly lead guitarist for the psychedelic bubblegum group the Lemon Pipers, best known for their smash sixties hit "The Green Tambourine" while Blauvelt played with Billy Joel in several bands. "Black Betty," Ram Jam's overmodulated smash, was written by none other than Huddie Ledbetter, the famous Leadbelly. It is a neat comment on popular music in 1977, that the summer's most engaging, silly record was written by a deceased, black, blues genius.

The highly effective leadership of Major-General Richard Gale overcame the haphazard nature of airborne operations 1939-1945, and enabled the unproven British 6th Airborne Division to achieve its objectives during the Normandy Campaign of June - August 1944. Despite its scattered parachute landings 6th Airborne achieved its D-Day goals, and held the line for three months, a task for which it was not equipped. This study examines the factors that made this possible and analyses Gale's impact on the Division's organisational development, preparation and training which lay behind this success. To establish the environment within which Gale had to operate, this book explores the shaping forces which influenced the creation of 6th Airborne Division: the constraint of inadequate resources and the absence of a clear applied airborne doctrine, inter-service politics and the influence of key war figures such as Field Marshal Sir Alan Brooke. The study pursues the links between war situation,
