Oxygen

It is the summer of 1997. Alec Valentine is returning to England to care for his ailing mother, Alice, a task that only reinforces his deep sense of inadequacy. In San Francisco, his older brother Larry prepares to come home as well, preoccupied with an acting career that is sliding toward sleaze and a marriage that is faltering. In Paris, on the other hand, the Hungarian playwright L szlo L z r seems to have it all--critical acclaim, a loving boyfriend, and a close circle of friends--yet even he is haunted by guilt and tragedy. For each of them the time has come to assess the turns taken, the opportunities missed. And for each there will be one last chance to break free from the past and find redemption in a moment of clarity and courage. Andrew Miller has given us an intimate, compelling meditation that evokes an extraordinary range of emotions and insights--Oxygen lives and breathes beyond the final page.

While we may take our air for granted, Earth was not always an oxygenated planet. How did it come to be this way? Donald Canfield covers this vast history, emphasizing its relationship to the evolution of life and the evolving chemistry of Earth. He guides readers through the various lines of scientific evidence, considers some of the wrong turns and dead ends along the way, and highlights the scientists and researchers who have made key discoveries in the field. Now with an incisive new preface by the author, Oxygen takes readers on an astonishing journey of discovery, telling the story of how our planet became oxygenated.

It is invisible, it is powerful, and it is life sustaining. It is oxygen. We inhale it everyday of our lives, and while it makes up only 21 percent of the air we breathe, it iskey to our very existence. The more we learn about its healing properties, themore we recognize its tremendous potential as a medical treatment for manyserious disorders. Yet few have known about its important therapeutic uses untilnow. In his new book, Anti-Inflammatory Oxygen Therapy, best-selling author Dr.Mark Sircus examines the remarkable benefits oxygen therapy offers, fromdetoxification to treatments for disorders such as arthritis and aging, with aspecial emphasis on cancer. While the term oxygen therapy conjures images of a crucially ill patient lying ina hospital bed with tubes strapped to his face, this book will show that oxygencan offer so much more.
