Mythos bildades 1969 på initiativ av Stephan Kaske (flöjt, keyboard, sång, gitarr), som hittade kamraterna Harald Weisse (bas) och Thomas Hildebrand (trummor). Olika framträdanden imponerade så mycket på bolagschefen och talangscouten Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser att bandet kunde släppa sitt debutalbum på OHR-etiketten 1972.
