På gården Cock Shield i 1800-talets England väntar den unga tjänsteflickan Molly barn. Hon vägrar dock att avslöja vem som är fadern. Denna händelse kommer att förändra allt för samtliga inblandade, inte bara tjänstefolket utan även godsägaren Angus McBain, hans hustru Delia och dottern Jane. På gården arbetar även den unge Davie Armstrong, som tillsammans med Jane uppdagar sanningen: det är Angus som är far till barnet. Allt kompliceras av att Davie plötsligt måste lämna gården samtidigt som Delia också blir gravid. Angus McBain, som nästan gett upp hoppet om en manlig arvinge, blir överlycklig. Men när sonen Amos föds är han vanskapt och Angus förvisar honom till ett vindsrum. Det blir istället Jane som får ta hand om sin bror, som saknar ben men som istället har något annat: intellekt. Något som Angus fullkomligt struntar i. Istället låter han gården förfalla samtidigt som han super ner sig. När Davie återvänder är allt förändrat och makten har förflyttats till den missbildade men kloke sonen ... -
