För första gången presenteras här på svenska en av ortodoxa kyrkans viktigaste helgon och läromästare, helige Gregorios Palamas (1296 1359). Helige Gregorios Palamas är ett helgon och en kyrkofader som levde i Bysans på 1300-talet. Han gav, på ett mycket framgångsrikt sätt, teologiskt uttryck för den ortodoxa asketiska andligheten. Hans förståelse av hesychasmen, den asketiska rörelse som fokuserade på avskildhet och ständig bön, grundar sig i en djupt inkarnatorisk teologi:När kroppen, genom sinnet, erfar andlig glädje sker det inte genom någon som helst förminskning av dess gemenskap med kroppen. Snarare förhärligar det kroppen och förandligar den. Ty då den, på grund av detta, förkastar köttets alla onda lidelser så tynger den inte längre ner själen utan stiger upp med den, så att hela människan blir andlig. Det står ju skrivet: var och en som har fötts av ande är ande (Joh 3:6, 8) (Triaderna II, 2.9). Den här boken härleder ortodoxa kyrkans andliga och asketiska tradition från ökenfäderna genom hela den patristiska traditionen fram till hesychasmen i Bysans och ända fram till de ryska eremiterna. Den visar hur Palamas teologiska gärning överstiger gränserna för en enda andlig skola, och hur den förnyar och berikar förståelsen av det kristna mysteriet. Fader John Meyendorff (+1992) var dekan och professor i kyrkohistoria och patristik vid Saint Vladimir s Orthodox Theological Seminary i USA. Han har författat flera böcker inom kyrkohistoria, bysantinska studier, patristik och kring ekumeniska frågor.
