När en äldre kvinna avlider leder det till en serie händelser. Två män mördas som en följd av hennes död och flera svävar i omedelbar fara. Fyrtio år tidigare har den 10-åriga pojken Joe en het sommardag bestämt sig för att rymma hemifrån för att undkomma sin far. Pojkens öde får konsekvenser många år senare. Det som hände då får en våldsam upplösning där det blir en kamp mot tiden. Handlingen utspelar sig i Östergötland och norra Småland.

Namnet Bud Spencer hämtade han från sitt favoritöl Bud- weiser samt favveskådisen Spencer Tracy. Regissören till 'Banana Joe', Steno, har också instruerat Spencer i de fyra 'Flatfoot'-filmerna.
