Jan Assmann är en tysk egyptolog, känd för sin tes om att monoteismens uppkomst vid judarnas uttåg ur Egypten. Men Assmann har också varit verksam utanför det egyptologiska fältet. Han har dels utvecklat en teori om kulturellt minne och dels studerat monoteismens politiska implikationer. Montoteism och våldets språk sammanfattar mycket av hans tänkande om såväl kulturteori som monoteism. Ola Sigurdson, professor i tros- och livsåskådningsvetenskap, bidrar med en essä som introducerar Assmans författarskap. Monoteismen måste inte vara våldsbenägen, men har ofta varit det i den form i vilken den förmedlats. Assmann vill göra oss medvetna om de här föreställningarnas historiska ursprung och därigenom bidra till att begränsa deras destruktiva inflytande. Syftet med hans skrift är inte bara analytiskt, utan också terapeutiskt.
