Greve Eduard von Keyserling (1855-1918) härstammade från en baltisk adelssläkt i i Kurland (numera Kalvene) Lettland. Där ligger slottet Tels-Paddern vilket var Eduards hem under en stor del av hans barndom och ungdom. När han var 20 år började han studera konsthistoria och filosofi i Dorpat, och senare flyttade han till Wien. Efter studierna återvände han till sitt barndomshem och ägnade sig under några år åt skrivande, samt åt förvaltning av två gods som tillhörde hans mor. När modern dog 1894 flyttade han tillsammans med två av sina systrar till Mu¨nchen. Där drabbades han av en svår sjukdom som bland annat medförde att han blev blind. Hans bräckliga hälsa gjorde att han blev helt bunden vid hemmet. Genom att diktera för sina systrar kunde han fortsätta med sitt författande, som kom att omfatta en stor mängd romaner, noveller och essäer som gavs ut under de sista tio åren av hans liv. Numera räknas han till de mest betydande tyskspråkiga författarna inom den litterära impressionismen.
