Karl Marx och Friedrich Engels var båda konstintresserade och skrev en hel del om konst. Allt sedan dess har diskussionen fortsatt. I Att placera sig själv i historien redogör Peter Ekström för denna yviga debatt. Hans syfte är delvis att ge en introduktion till den marxistiska konstdiskussionen. Men främst har han undersökt om det finns någonting av den som fortfarande är giltigt och användbart idag.
