Robert Frank: Mary’s Book

Frank’s artist’s book and love letter for his first wife exemplifies the poetic, virtuosic approach to photobooks that would come to define his storied career Called 'a poet with a camera' by Edward Steichen, Robert Frank (1924–2019) was one of many artists who searched for creative freedom in postwar Paris. It was while he was living in the city in 1949 that Frank produced a seminal volume in his oeuvre: a rare, personal photobook made for his then-girlfriend, artist Mary Frank (née Lockspeiser). In Mary’s Book, the photographer chronicled his time in the city with his poetic, insightful and inquisitive eye, and experimented for the first time with combining text and image. This singular object proved an important bookmaking exercise for Frank, and remains as evidence of his maturing artistic vision, which led to one of the most influential photobooks of the 20th century, The Americans (1958). Mary’s Book reproduces this love letter in full for the first time, accompanied by

Commemorating the photography giant’s centennial, with a new text by the famed poet and writer Ocean Vuong Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of his medium, Robert Frank broke new ground with his candid, poignant images of American life in the mid-20th century. Robert Frank

'War is over; the heroic French population reaffirms superiority. Love, Paris, and Flowers...but London was black, white, and gray, the elegance, the style, all present in front of always changing fog. Then I met a man from Wales talking about the Miners and I had read How Green Was My Valley. This became my only try to make a 'Story'.' --Robert Frank This magnificent new edition of London/Wales, which features never-before-seen photographs, juxtaposes Frank's images of the elegant world of London money with the grimy working-class world of postwar Wales--bankers opposite coal miners. It brings together two distinct bodies of work, and reveals a significant documentary precedent for The Americans. In also offers an important view of Frank's development, demonstrating an early interest in social commentary, in the narrative potential of photographic sequencing, and innovative use of the expressionistic qualities of the medium.
