Samlingsvolymen Essäer innehåller Jan Olov Ulléns essäsamlingar Det skrivna är partitur [1979], Gå, lilla ballad, och finn min härskarinna [1994] och den tidigare opublicerade Höviska essäer. Essäerna rör sig från medeltida italiensk poesi till Göran Sonnevi och Lars Norén. Essäer samlar en av våra finaste poesikritikers livslånga arbete med litteratur. Jan Olov Ullén (f. 1934) är författare, kritiker och översättare. Han arbetade länge som producent vid Sveriges Radio.Följande skriver Rebecka Kärde i sitt förord:"På samma sätt som Ezra Pound är poet och Marcel Proust är prosaist är Ullén inte litteraturkritiker han är poesikritiker. Med detta kall kommer särskilda svårigheter. Kritik av prosa är ju, ytligt sett och på håll, ett imitationsarbete, med grund i en gemensam syntaktisk konvention, ett sätt att föra sig i världen och tiden. Mellan poesikritiken och dess objekt finns ett större epistemologiskt avstånd. För att låna en av Ulléns formuleringar om Jesper Svenbros »Mimopoeia« är utmaningen att »öka vår rent rationella förståelse av den så irrationella text som kallas dikt«. Det gör det varken »svårare« eller »lättare« att skriva om poesi än om prosa. Poängen är att metoden delvis är en annan, och det är sällan man märker det så tydligt som hos Ullén. Han sätter samtliga sinnen och speglar i arbete: hörsel, takt, andning, historia, kontext hela kroppen, hela världen!"
