Nu är hon borta sedan länge, och nya krig härjar det kollapsande Jugoslavien; nya flyktingar vandrar längs samma vägar som modern vandrat. Hennes berättelse tränger sig på, men att gestalta den övergår poetens förmåga. Medan han lyssnar till sin mors röst färdas hans tankar mellan det som var och det som är; Balkan efter kriget och det nya landet, insikten att han aldrig lämnat något bakom sig. Lockbetet är ett försök, en ansträngning, att fånga den historia som undgår förståelse. Den frågar hur, och till vilket pris, litteraturen kan förmedla erfarenhet. Poetens, moderns och vännens röster vävs samman i denna täta berättelse om exil, ensamhet, personlig förlust och minnets konturer. I den samtida serbiska prosan intar David Albahari (f. 1948) en särställning. Hans omedelbara föregångare är Danilo Kis, med vilken han delar utmanandet av historieskrivningen och brottet med den realistiska tradition som varit rådande i det forna Jugoslavien. Verken är besläktade med centraleuropeiska författare som Peter Handke, Thomas Bernhard och Peter Esterhazy mörkt humoristiska, fundamentalt ifrågasättande och anti-utopiska. Albahari är också en etablerad översättare till serbiska av angloamerikanska författare, som Thomas Pynchon, Vladimir Nabokov, Margaret Atwood, Robert Coover och Saul Bellow.
