Kerstin Bernhard (19142004) inledde sin karriär i samband med att svensk modefotografi på allvar började bli en självständig genre. Hennes modebilder från 1940-, 50- och 60-talen behåller ännu i dag en tydlig fräschör och några av dem är utan tvekan klassiker. Men Bernhards livsverk innehåller mycket mer än så. Som porträttfotograf fick hon på 1940-talet genomslag i tidskrifter som Idun, Vecko-Journalen och Filmjournalen. Något årtionde senare hade hon skiftat huvudfokus mot mat. Hennes medverkan i Bonniers kokbok var pionjärartad på samma sätt som kokboken var banbrytande med sina stora färgbilder. I de friare berättelserna om bröd och människor skapade hon ett kulturhistoriskt bildmaterial som saknar motstycke. Mot slutet av sin gärning sökte Kerstin Bernhard det estetiskt tilltalande i vardagens allra enklaste former. Kritikern Kurt Bergengren skrev: Det är inspirerande bilder, svindlande sköna former i en fotografisk form som är lika ren. Det finns ingenting att tillägga. Den här boken är del två i en serie med fotoböcker från Nordiska museet. Kända motiv kompletteras med sällan visade bilder ur Kerstin Bernhards omfattande arkiv, som har ingått i museets samlingar sedan 1990-talet.
