Marilynne Robinson, one of the greatest novelists of our time, returns to the town of Gilead in one of the most acclaimed novels of 2014
Marilynne Robinson's Worldly Gospel
In her five novels and many essays, Marilynne Robinson develops a distinctive Christian vision animated by a powerfully affirmative and sacramental attitude toward the physical world and everyday human life. An in-depth philosophical exploration of her work – from Gilead to her extensive non-fiction writing – Marilynne Robinson’s Worldly Gospel reads the author’s theology as articulating a compelling response to the claim that Christianity is an otherworldly religion whose adherents seek through it to escape the misfortunes of this life. Ryan Kemp and Jordan Rodgers argue that Robinson’s work challenges the modern atheistic tradition dating back to Friedrich Nietzsche to present a unique form of contemporary faith that seeks to affirm the world rather than deny its claims.

Jack

Dialogue with Trypho
Outside the New Testament, our earliest complete witness to Christian apologetic against the Jews remains the ''Dialogue with Trypho'', written by Justin Martyr (circa 165), a convert to Christianity from traditional Greek religion. The ''Dialogue'' purports to be a two-day dialogue that took place in Asia Minor between Justin and Trypho, a Hellenized Jew. Justin argues extensively on the basis of lengthy Old Testament quotations that Christ is the Messiah and God incarnate, and that the Christian community is the new Israel. In the beginning of the work Justin recounts how he converted to Christianity. The ''Dialogue'' remains of great, and varying, interest. It has important information on the development of Jewish-Christian relations, on the development of the text of the New Testament, and on the existence and character of the early Jewish Christian community. Justin's story of how he became a Christian is one of our early conversion accounts. The ''Dialogue'' is a useful textbook
The Book of Dialogue
The Book of Dialogue is an invaluable resource for writers and students of narrative seeking to master the art of effective dialogue. The book will teach you how to use dialogue to lay the groundwork for events in a story, to balance dialogue with other story elements, to dramatize events through dialogue, and to strategically break up dialogue with other vital elements of your story in order to capture and hold a reader's or viewer's interest in the overall arc of the narrative. Writers will find Turco's classic an essential reference for crafting dialogue. Using dialogue to teach dialogue, Turco's chapters focus on narration, diction, speech, and genre dialogue. Through the Socratic dialogue method - invented by Plato in his dialogues outlining the teachings of Socrates - Turco provides an effective tool to teach effective discourse. He notes, 'Plato wrote lies in order to tell the truth. That's what a fiction writer does and has always done'. Now it's your turn.
