Axel Honneth is one of the most influential social and political philosophers in contemporary German political thought and one of the central figures of the third generation of the Frankfurt School. Honneth’s philosophical project presents at once a solution to a problem that has beset Frankfurt School Critical Theory from the first generation onwards, and offers a re-conceptualisation of social philosophy and its methodology in general. Honneth’s work presents a viable alternative to mainstream (especially Rawlsian) political philosophy by taking on challenges mainstream theories tend to avoid. Om sånt kan Hilma inte mycket när hon anländer till Landskrona för att börja på Seminariet. Hon kommer från en by på landsbygden men förväntar sig nu att världen ska öppna sig och att hennes drömmar om ett lättare liv ska slå in.I Landskrona finns den gamla fästningen Citadellet. Den har tidigare varit fängelse men är nu arbetsanstalt för s k sedeslösa kvinnor. Om det har Hilma inte heller någon kunskap. Men redan på stationen blir hon vittne till hur ett antal kvinnor hoppar från en av tågets kreatursvagnar och transporteras bort i en skåpbil. Vid stationen stöter Hilma också på en irriterande ung man som senare ska komma att spela en stor roll i hennes liv. Och så får hon sällskap till Seminariet med den underliga Viola.På skolan blir hon rumskamrat med Viola och Bea. Flera av de nya kamraterna tycker liksom Hilma att Viola är underlig. Hilma kan inte släppa tankarna på vad hon kan bära på för hemlighet. Vid en konfrontation i lekens form berättar Viola att hon varit intagen på Citadellet. Hennes livsberättelse griper tag i Hilmas känsla för rättvisa och väcker intuitivt hennes engagemang. Efter stark vånda förstår Hilma att hon måste göra något för de intagna kvinnorna. Men vad? Från grunden växer tanken om att göra sin röst hörd och att protestera tillsammans med sina kamrater. Samtidigt som livet med studier och utflykter pågår utvecklas planer för hur de konkret ska gå till väga. Hilma känner att hon, tillsammans med de andra, har ett uppdrag och hon utvecklar initiativkraft, nytänkande och mod.
