Since we first wound a heron hackle, we fell in love with the graceful spey fly. Simpler than classics but even more effective, the movement of fibers and a translucent appearance that gives the fly life. We also present two zonkers, cut with the right tapering and pimped with a sweeping heron hackle—truly irresistible. Lastly, our little shrimp fly has proven effective on the coast and in clear rivers. This is the sunshine doctor, a perfect fly on the “hopeless” sunny low water conditions that are so tricky. Dangle it in the head of the pool where the oxygen level is highest, this is often where the fish hide and where they gather enough interest to take a fly. Again, we fish them small, very small, even tiny. Make sure the hackle is sparse and if you fish a winged version use a few strands of teal.
