In 1902, John McCabe (Beatty) arrives in the mining town of Presbyterian Church, Washington. He sets up a gambling hall and brothel and enters into a partnership with Constance Miller (Christie), who takes over management of the brothel. However, as the two - and the town - become richer, they attract the attention of a ruthless mining company who want to buy them out and will not take no for an answer.
