I sin knappa produktion, som förutom ett drama samt lyrik framför allt utgjordes av kortprosa, protesterade Borchert mot kriget. Borchert var soldat i andra världskriget och satt dessutom fängslad av nazistregimen på grund av kritiska yttranden han fällt. Dödsstraffet omvandlades dock till fängelsestraff. Borchert har en enastående förmåga att i ögonblicksbilder blixtbelysa krigets vanvett och situationen i Tyskland år 1945, "timmen noll". Nobelpristagaren Heinrich Böll har skrivit ett efterord. Om berättelsen "Brödet" skriver han: "(...) den är ett mästerverk inom kortnovellens speciella genre (...)" Recensioner: "Skandalöst egentligen att det skulle dröja 60 år innan dessa oslagbara skildringar av ett ruinerat Tyskland år Noll (en pjäs och 14 prosastycken) ikläddes en svensk språkdräkt, men nu finns de äntligen tillgängliga i Bodil Zaleskys fina översättning." Nästan förbigående klingar de högst häpnadsväckande, dock rytmiska och musikalisk noggranna texterna, i vilka ett djupsinnigt, retligt, sårbart lyrisk Jag träder in i en intim tvåspråkighet med läsaren.
