'Die lyrische Sphäre sollte mir so wenig zur künstlerischen Heimat werden wie die dramatische.' Mit dramatischen Versuchen und Gedichten hatte Thomas Mann seine literarischen Fingerübungen gemacht, bis er, etwa zwanzigjährig, die Prosa als seine eigentliche Sprachform entdeckte. Skizzen entstanden, Studien, die Lust, Erfahrenes und Erlebtes zu berichten, wuchs, entwickelte sich zur Erzählung - Ambiente und Ereignisse, Charaktere und Handlungen griffen ineinander. Beschreibung und direkte Rede forderten klare Diktion, der Wortlaut verband sich dem Satzbau. Thomas Mann hat mit seiner vierbändigen JosephGeschichte einen der größten mythischen Romane des 20. Jahrhunderts geschrieben. Aus einer kurzen biblischen Erzählung entwickelt der Autor ein episches Gemälde, das durch szenischen Reichtum, durch seine menschlichen Figuren, seinen Humor und seine Weisheit gleichermaßen begeistert. Insgesamt 17 Jahre hat Thomas Mann an seinem Opus magnum gearbeitet, bis 1943 der letzte Band erschien. Königliche Hoheit / Der Erwählte
Beide in diesem Band enthaltenen Romane verführen durch ihre parodistische Meisterschaft. In heiterem Ton erzählt 'Königliche Hoheit' (1909) das zeremoniell geprägte höfische Leben des Prinzen Klaus Heinrich, der sich mit der pragmatischen Lebensauffassung der amerikanischen Milliardärstochter Imma Spoelmann konfrontiert sieht. 'Der Erwählte' (1951) ist eine Nach- und Neuerzählung der Legende von Papst Gregorius, die Thomas Mann in der Fassung Hartmanns von Aue bereits 1894 kennen lernte. Während der Arbeit an 'Doktor Faustus' stieß er erneut auf den Stoff und formte daraus 'dieses in Gott vergnügte Büchlein'.
