His career as a dramatist produced four classics and his best short stories are held in high esteem by writers and critics. Chekhov had at first written stories only for financial gain, but as his artistic ambition grew, he made formal innovations which have influenced the evolution of the modern short story. The Death of the Lion is an 1894 short story by Henry James. This short novel is a black comedy about fame, manipulation, pretension, and surviving it all.The narrator, a reprehensible and seedy journalist, sets out to interview a minor author, and in his own quest for glory, turns the author into the celebrity of the day.The sudden and untimely death of the author, with his latest work unfinished, presents a troubling dilemma for the narrator, which he resolves with no more conscience than he had when he began his quest. This is the 1909 New York edition. Total Running Time (TRT): 1h, 41minHenry James, OM (Order of Merit) (1843-1916) was an American-born writer, regarded as one of the key figures of 19th-century literary realism. He is best known for a number of novels showing Americans encountering Europe and Europeans. The Beast in the Jungle, Ljudbok

The Beast in the Jungle is a 1903 novella by Henry James, first published as part of the collection, The Better Sort. Almost universally considered one of James' finest short narratives, this story treats appropriately universal themes: loneliness, fate, love and death. John Marcher, the protagonist, is reacquainted with May Bartram, a woman he knew ten years earlier, who remembers his odd secret: Marcher is seized with the belief that his life is to be defined by some catastrophic or spectacular event, lying in wait for him like a "beast in the jungle." May decides to buy a house in London with the money she inherited from a great aunt, and to spend her days with Marcher, curiously awaiting what fate has in store for him.The parable of John Marcher and his peculiar destiny has spoken to many readers who have speculated on the worth and meaning of human life.James placed The Beast in the Jungle at the head of volume 17 of the New York Edition (1907–1909) of his fiction, along with another insightful examination of life and death, The Altar of the Dead. Critics have almost unanimously agreed with the author's own high opinion of the tale, with some going so far as to put the story among the best short narratives in any literature.Total Running Time (TRT): 2h, 18minHenry James, OM (Order of Merit) (1843-1916) was an American-born writer, regarded as one of the key figures of 19th-century literary realism. He is best known for a number of novels showing Americans encountering Europe and Europeans.

Jean Gourdon's Four Days, E-bok

Jean Gourdon's Four Days is a short novel by French author Émile Zola.Jean Gourdon's Four Days deserves to rank among the very best things to which Zola has signed his name. It is a study of four typical days in the life of a Proven al peasant of the better sort, told by the man himself...In the first of the days, it is Spring and Jean Gourdon is eighteen years of age, just to steals away from the house so he may meet his coy sweetheart Babet by the waters of the broad river Durance...Next follows a day during Summer, five years later. Jean is a soldier in the Italian war, and goes through the horrors of a battle and is wounded. This episode is exceedingly ingenious in its observation of the sentiments of a common man under fire...The Autumn day of the story occurs fifteen years later. Jean and Babet have now long been married. They are rich, healthy and devoted to one another, but there is a single happiness lacking - they have no child. But maybe now, when the grapes are ripe, this gift also is to be theirs...The optimistic tone has been so consistently preserved in the first three parts, that one must almost resent the tragedy of the Winter day. This is eighteen years later, on a winter's night, and the river Durance rises... Jean Gourdon's Four Days was originally published in 1874 as Les Quatre Journees de Jean Gourdon, and was included in the collection of short fiction entitled Nouveaux Contes à Ninon. Translated by Francis J. Reynolds. E-Book: ePUB, 16,400 words, average reading time 1 hour, 20 min. Unabridged full version. The Third Person, E-bok

The Third Person is a short story by Henry James, first published and included in the collection The Soft Side, published in 1900.The Third Person is an amusing spoof on spooking. The 'ghostly man about the house' in whom two increasingly competitive maiden ladies come to take a proprietary interest is as unlikely to inspire terror as the wraith in one of James's earliest tales. The anticlimactic crisis may need a footnote for younger readers: a Tauchnitz was an unauthorized continental paperback edition of a british or american book which, purely for copyright reasons, was not supposed to be brought back to England. To think of this as smuggling certainly placed, for James's contemporaries, the crimes of the ghostly third person in a hilarious perspective.Henry James, OM (Order of Merit) (1843-1916) was an American-born writer, regarded as one of the key figures of 19th-century literary realism. He is best known for a number of novels showing Americans encountering Europe and Europeans. The Battle of Life, E-bok

The Battle of Life: A Love Story is a novella by Charles Dickens, first published in 1846. It is the fourth of his five "Christmas Books", preceded by A Christmas Carol (1843), The Chimes (1844), The Cricket on the Hearth (1845) and followed by The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain (1848).The setting is an English village that stands on the site of an historic battle. Some characters refer to the battle as a metaphor for the struggles of life, hence the title. The Battle of Life is the only one of the five Christmas Books that has no supernatural or explicitly religious elements. The story bears some resemblance to The Cricket on the Hearth in two respects: it has a non-urban setting, and it is resolved with a romantic twist. It is even less of a social novel than is Cricket. As is typical with Dickens, the ending is a happy one.Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's most memorable fictional characters and is generally regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian period. During his life, his works enjoyed unprecedented fame, and by the twentieth century his literary genius was broadly acknowledged by critics and scholars. His novels and short stories continue to be widely popular. Dickens was regarded as the literary colossus of his age. His 1843 novella, A Christmas Carol, is one of the most influential works ever written, and it remains popular and continues to inspire adaptations in every artistic genre. Set in London and Paris, his 1859 novel, A Tale of Two Cities, is the best selling novel of all time. His creative genius has been praised by fellow writers - from Leo Tolstoy to George Orwell and G. K. Chesterton - for its realism, comedy, prose style, unique characterisations, and social criticism.

Sir Dominick Ferrand , Ljudbok

Sir Dominick Ferrand is a short novel by Henry James, first published in Cosmopolitan Magazine in 1892. It was later included in the collection The Real Thing and Other Tales, published in 1893."Levity" is not a word often applied to Henry James, but this story has about it an attractively lighthearted quality. It tells of Peter Baron, a poor, young struggling writer of adequate, if not transcendent, talent, who lives in a dreary London boarding house inhabited also by a mysteriously clairvoyant and beautiful young widow, with her small boy. When Baron buys himself a second-hand writing desk to stimulate the creative juices, he finds carefully hidden within it a cache of letters that appear to compromise a recently deceased statesman. The discovery and his struggle to handle the questions they pose ultimately change his life. Along the way he also discovers, as a fringe benefit, a talent for what Americans (though probably not Jamesians) call Tin Pan Alley.Total Running Time (TRT): 2h, 20 minHenry James, OM (Order of Merit) (1843-1916) was an American-born writer, regarded as one of the key figures of 19th-century literary realism. He is best known for a number of novels showing Americans encountering Europe and Europeans. Shamokhin tells the story of his helpless love for Ariadne. She was his neighbor, a beautiful but cold young woman, "a nightingale made of metal," who challenged him to fall in love with her. When Shamokhin refused to elope with her, she eloped with Lubkov, a married man with four children.Months later, Ariadne wrote again to Shamokhin, begging him to join her in Italy. When Shamokhin finally caved in and went to her, he discovered that Ariadne and Lubkov were lovers. A year later, Lubkov had used up all his money and returned to his wife. Shamokhin then became Ariadne's lover. Now his money is almost gone and his life is destroyed, but he feels helpless to leave her.Total Running Time (TRT): 53 min.Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860-1904) was a Russian physician, dramatist and author who is considered to be among the greatest writers of short stories in history. His career as a dramatist produced four classics and his best short stories are held in high esteem by writers and critics.Chekhov had at first written stories only for financial gain, but as his artistic ambition grew, he made formal innovations which have influenced the evolution of the modern short story. His originality consists in an early use of the stream-of-consciousness technique, later adopted by James Joyce and other modernists, combined with a disavowal of the moral finality of traditional story structure. He made no apologies for the difficulties this posed to readers, insisting that the role of an artist was to ask questions, not to answer them.
