Den moderna staten byggdes enligt de flesta bedömare under det som brukar kallas det långa 1800-talet (ca 1789-1914). Staten gjorde då stora framsteg med att kunna driva in nya skatter, att reformera byråkratin och att via folkräkningar och statistiska centralbyråer kunna kartlägga sitt territorium och sin befolkning. Men vad innebär det egentligen att bygga en stat?
