Doktorn Och Djävlarna - Ett Filmmanus
Dylan Thomas (1914-1953) är mest känd för sin poesi, sina noveller och hörspelet Under Milk Wood, men det är mindre känt att han skrev och redigerade filmmanus. På uppdrag av Donald Taylor på Gryphon Films skrev Dylan Thomas The Doctor and the Devils 1943-1944 under arbetstiteln Business of Death. Doktorn och djävlarna är baserad på verkliga händelser i Edinburgh, Skottland 1827-1829. Konkurrensen mellan stadens anatomer är hård och tillgången på kroppar för dissektion är ett konkurrensmedel. Det är inte ovanligt att anhöriga vaktar sina dödas gravar i upp till fjorton dagar för att hindra "Återuppväckarna" från att gräva upp och sälja liken. Irländarna William Burke och William Hare anländer var för sig till Skottland för att arbeta som rallare och de träffas i Edinburgh i november 1827. Mellan julen detta år fram till oktober 1828 mördar Burke och Hare 16 personer, kropparna säljs till stadens mest populäre anatom dr Robert Knox. Deras affärsverksamhet avslöjas när de mördat gamla Mary Docherty. De historiska morden hade länge fascinerat Taylor och framför allt frågan i händelsernas vetenskapliga centrum: Om målet helgar alla medel.
